DES MOINES - Gladys Gilbert, 95, of Des Moines, died Friday, February 13, 2009 at the Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines.
Gladys was born June 9, 1913 at Chelsea, Iowa, the daughter of John and Jennie (Bence) Brown. She graduated from Spirit Lake High School in 1931. Gladys was united in marriage to Arthur Eugene "Gene" Gilbert April 17, 1938 near Ankeny, Iowa. Gene preceded Gladys in death on September 17, 1999. On September 1, 2000, Gladys married Wayne Gilbert at the Elkhart Christian Church. Gladys had worked for Look Magazine and later for Meredith Publishing in Des Moines before retiring in 1978. Gladys was a member of the Elkhart Christian Church, the Elkhart Women's Club, and the Elkhart Garden Club. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, ceramics and watching birds.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Wayne, of Des Moines; a son and daughter-in-law: Ronald and Janet Gilbert of Des Moines; a daughter: Donna Lee of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Brian (Chris) Gilbert, Debbi (Jeff) Nichols, Kurt Lee, Denise (Jim) Holmes, Susie Gilbert; twelve great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Gene Gilbert; three brothers: Warren Brown, Clarence Brown, Glenn Brown; and one sister: Lucille Johnson.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Elkhart Christian Church. Interment will be in the Elkhart Cemetery.
Visitation for Mrs. Gilbert will be 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell.
