Obituary

Herbert Fred Moore Herb Moore, 81, of Huxley, Iowa, passed away at his home on August 14, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Herb was a gentleman, who lived his life doing his duty as he saw it to his country, his community and his family with humor, humility and dignity. Herb was born January 22, 1923, as the youngest of four children of LaMont and Edna (Drake) Moore, on the family's farm outside Gifford, Iowa. His formative years were spent on the family farm during the depression, until he graduated from Eldora High School in 1940. In 1942, Herb enlisted in the US Navy pilot training program and graduated as a U.S. Naval Aviator from the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida in 1944. Herb served in the South Pacific in World War II in 1945-46 as a pilot in reconnaissance planes catapulted from the deck of a light cruiser. Herb was awarded the Air Medal with two gold stars for acts of heroism, including the saving at sea of two downed Australian pilots. Herb served in the Navy Reserve and then the Air National Guard until 1972, when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. On January 10, 1946, days after returning home from his release from active duty, Herb married Shirley Jean Fuller. Their marriage endured, with Shirley passing shortly before their 57th wedding anniversary. To this union were born three children - Patricia, Mathew and Bill. Herb and his family moved to Cambridge in 1954, where Herb took a position with the Cambridge State Bank. Over the next forty years, Herb acquired the bank, now named First State Bank, was joined by his son Bill in the business, and expanded to build another branch in Huxley. During those four decades, Herb assisted countless local residents, business people and farmers. Herb also was active in improving the local community outside his banking business. Herb served as a cub scout den "mother", member of the Ballard School Board, the Lions Club, the American Legion, and the Ballard Country Club. Herb retired in 1993 following his son's purchase of the bank. Following retirement, Herb and Shirley moved from Cambridge to Yankton, South Dakota in 1998. Having become an avid golfer later in life, Herb joined the local country club. Following Shirley's passing at the end of 2002, Herb returned to Iowa and made his home in Huxley, where he made and reunited with many friends. Herb is survived by his sister, Alice Soballe, of Medford, Oregon, his daughter, Patricia Moore of Lawrence, Kansas, his son Herbert Mathew Moore of Alamo, California, and his wife, Laura, and children Adam, Ethan, Stuart and Jake, and his son Bill Moore of Huxley, Iowa, and his wife, Kelly, and children, Ashley and Alexandra. In addition, Herb leaves several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his brother, Murphy, his sister, Marjorie, and a grandson, Khalil. Herb left this world better than he found it, and was surrounded by family and friends (and the dog) in his final days. Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, August 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Memorials should be made in Herb's name to the American Cancer Society
