Obituary

Jo Ann Hunt, 92, of Nevada passed away Thursday, September 17, 2015, at Israel Family Hospice House. Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday, October 4, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. A memorial celebration will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 5, at Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada; family will also greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private family inurnment will be in Nevada Municipal Cemetery near the south entrance. Jo Ann was born February 27, 1923, to Mearl and Ruth (Boynton) Hunt and graduated from Nevada High School in '41 during World War II. A Nevada business woman, she opened Hunt's Super Valu in 1961 which thrived. In 1970 Jo Ann welcomed two nieces and three nephews into her home; Kenneth, Terry, Steve, David and Holly. After retiring in 1981 she was honored with the Friend of Education Award in '81 and named Honorary Woman of the Year in '84. A gifted storyteller and Senior Nevada Historian, Jo Ann represented the Nevada Community Historical Society in many capacities beginning in the '70s. In '04 her instrumental work on the book Voices from the Past: The Story of Nevada, Iowa helped garner the State Historical Society of Iowa's Loren Horton Community History Award for increasing awareness and participation in Iowa history on a local level. As a lifelong member of Central Presbyterian Church she taught Sunday school and served as elder and deacon. She enjoyed travelling and spending time with her many nieces and nephews. Jo Ann is survived by her adopted daughter, Holly Hunt Strayer; her son-in-law, Gary Cameron; her sister, Fran Colyer; and her grandchildren Jason Johnson, Gabriel and Joshua Starr as well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Eldon, Keith, Hollis and Terry; her sisters, Margo Houg and Barbara Clay and her son-in-law Michael Strayer.
