NEVADA - John P. Bates, 88, of rural Nevada died at Story County Medical Center in Nevada January 1, 2005. Jon was born February 11, 1916 in rural Nevada, the son of James and Cordelia (Perry) Bates. John graduated from Shipley High School in 1935. He was united in marriage to Margaret G. Quigley on February 11, 1939 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Nevada. They farmed in the Shipley area for many years. John was a member of the United Methodist Church and Nevada Masonic Lodge #99. Survivors include four children: Gary (Anita) Bates of Ames, Iowa, Jim Bates of Bullhead City, Arizona, Marilyn (Ken) Nelson of Nevada, Iowa, Dennis (Sheila) Bates of Nashville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; an infant son, James; 2 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Wednesday at the Nevada United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 -8:00pm Tuesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Masonic Services will be held 8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home following the visitation. A memorial fund has been established.
