Obituary

William D. Shickell was born in Nevada, IA on February 18, 1939, to Thomas William and Ethel (Blickensderfer) Shickell. Bill passed away January 14, 2016, at the Mary Greeley Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Bill started kindergarten at Hickory Grove Country School southeast of Nevada and then attended and graduated from Nevada High School with the Class of 1957. On August 16, 1958 he was united in marriage to Linda Taylor at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. Bill was employed with the Atomic Energy Commission at Iowa State University and in Los Alamos, New Mexico; Gerlach Supply in Nevada and for 25 years at Heart of Iowa Coop. He thoroughly enjoyed the field of agriculture and the many farmers he met throughout the years. Taking off on his Gold Wing for a summer's evening ride was one of his favorite pas-times along with getting that motorhome out on the open road! He had a love for most all sports, not only as a spectator, but also officiating at high school football and basketball games and then playing basketball until his knees could no longer withstand the pain, which was much longer than a lot men his age. One of his greatest loves was watching his grandchildren play the games, always secretly wishing that soccer had been a sport during his high school days. Bill's family was his most prized possession, feeling extremely blessed by the love given to him by his children and grandchildren. Bill is survived by his wife, Linda; children, Cindy (Joe) Gallagher of Platte City, MO; Tim (Julie) Shickell of Nevada; Mike Shickell of Wichita, KS; Rebecca (Brian) Funke of Nevada and Dan (Kelly Safly) Shickell of Slater; eight granddaughters, Brooke (John) Sanborn, Teran (Josh) Clutts, Kate (Jason) Parker, Celeste (Justin) Evans, Brittany Shick-ell, Markie (Jason) Dinkel, Morgan Shickell and Michaela Funke; two grandsons, Taylor William Gallagher and Matt Funke; five great grandsons, Lucas Sanborn, Gavin Sanborn, Dekker Clutts, Dylan Clutts and Beckett Evans and one great granddaughter, Taytum Sanborn. His brother, Fred (Charlyn) Shickell of Lincoln, NE and sister, Nancy Baker of Carrizozo, New Mexico and nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Shickell; and nephew, Derek Shickell. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames on January 18 , 2016, at 10:30 A.M. with visitation at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home on Sunday, January 17, 2016, from 3 P.M. - 5 P.M.
