Alan Dale Duhn was born in Grundy Center September 18th, 1959, to Harry and Angeline (Riebkes) Duhn. He was the fourth of 5 children and grew up on a God loving farm filled with chores and value of hard work north of Wellsburg. Alan inherited his lifelong love of fishing from his Grandpa Riebkes and continued his luck of catching the big one up until the end. He also enjoyed some hunting years with his wife and her hunting dogs.
When Alan was around 10, he noticed the newest family down the road, 3 boys and a little red headed girl of 8, never thinking that this girl would end up being the love of his life! Many days were spent playing, riding bikes and enjoying the summer nights in our little group of friends. Childhood friends turned to high school sweethearts and on October 10th, 1980, Sheila Marie Aukes became Mrs. Alan Duhn. They resided is Wellsburg until 1988 when they moved to Cambridge Iowa. A longtime dream they built their own house in 1993 and still resided there. Over the 41 years of marriage, they enjoyed board games, cards, camping, fishing, hunting, loving life and laughing, a lot.
They had 2 boys Tad Alan Duhn born on March 8th, 1983, and Kyle Adam Duhn born August 12, 1985. Tad was blessed with 2 sons, Theron Silverthorn Duhn and Carter Alan Duhn. Kyle married Kristi Olson in 2012 and continued with the tradition of grandsons with Gunther Michael Duhn and Porter Adam Duhn. These grandsons were the light of Alan's life, and they will miss him. Carter loved fishing with Pop Pop on the boat the last couple of years.
Alan started his working career at Lindaman Lumber when he was a senior in High School, learning the many jobs of a carpenter. He then went on to work self employed in carpentry for many years. He was a jack of all trades including custom woodworking. In 2018 he started working as a finish carpenter until 2020 when he was diagnosed with cancer. Many know of his talents of making craft items in his shop over the years and he's glad to have left a legacy with that talent.
Alan had the bass voice everyone loved, his favorite song was How Great Thou Art. He enjoyed doing Karaoke with Sheila and they had many favorite songs they performed together.
Alan is survived by his wife Sheila, his son's Tad and Kyle (Kristi) Duhn and 4 grandsons. His Mother-in-law Carol (Aukes) Deaver, brother's-in-law Scott (Cindy) Aukes, Alan (Sharon) Aukes and Anthony (Julie) Aukes.
Siblings: Sheryl (Max) VanPelt, LeAnn (Dennis) Brewer, Harold (Julie) Duhn and Lynn (Deb) Duhn. Many nieces and nephews along with their children and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. His father-in-law Roger Aukes and stepdad Harry Deaver. His brother-in-law Max VanPelt, great nephew – niece. Sister-in-law Cindy Aukes.
It was an honor to have him as a son, brother, husband, father, pop-pop and friend. He loved to have fun and laugh. We will all miss him very much.
