Obituary

Alice Elizabeth Cook, 84, of Mingo died Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak. Alice was born April 4, 1922 in Des Moines, the daughter of Carl and Libbie (Hammond) Wieland. She was united in marriage to Leonard Cook May 9, 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. Leonard preceded Alice in death May 13, 2002. Alice was a homemaker and had also worked at the Adventureland Inn and Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was a member of the former Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valeria and upon its closing, moved her membership to Holy Cross Catholic Church in Farrar where she was also a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, her grandchildren and her pets. She had lived with her family at several locations including Los Angeles County, California, Warren, Polk and Marshall Counties in Iowa until settling at the farm in Jasper County near Mingo, Iowa in 1960. She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law: Rosemary (Larry) Hulse of Mingo, IA, Shirley (Vernon) Rotert of Marion, IA, Thresia (Michael) Gustafson of Maxwell, IA, Lenora (David) Kernen of Red Oak, IA, Charlotte (James) Culberson of Noxapater, MS, Renee (Doran) Tesdall of Ames, IA; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Joseph (JoAnn) Wieland of Waukee, IA, Carl (Ann) Wieland of Medford, OR, James (Virginia) Wieland of Fair Oaks, CA; and a sister: Edlee DeAngelo of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson: Samuel Culberson; a great-grandson: Austin Junk; and a sister-in-law: Lee Wieland. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valeria. Interment will be in the Graham cemetery near Mingo. Visitation will be 6:30 - 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. A rosary Service will be held at 7:45 PM. The Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
