Arnold Jay Leland passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the age of 96 years old.

He was born June 28, 1927 in Cambridge, Iowa to Ida (Hennick) and Lewis Leland.

Arnold graduated from Cambridge High School in 1945. He joined the Navy as Seaman 1st Class onboard Patrol Craft Escort, USS PCE868. He participated in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll on July 1, 1946 and was proud of his World War II Victory Medal.

In March of 1948 he married his high school sweetheart, Thelma Wheeler. To this union four children were born.

Arnold constructed three homes where he and Thelma raised their family. He salvaged lumber from the Cambridge Northwestern Hotel to use in building their second home. In 1972 he built his home on the hill. He enjoyed maintaining the property and always appreciated the beautiful view.

Arnold obtained his pilot's license in December 1948 and his love of airplanes and flying continued throughout his life.

Arnold was Custodian of Cambridge Elementary School for 35 years before retiring in 1987.

He was a faithful worshiper at the Church of the Brethren in Maxwell and later at Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines.

Arnold is survived by his children, Joetta Leland, Julee (Troy) Petersen, Kurt (Lisa) Leland and daughter-in-law Carol Leland; eight grandchildren, Kollin Leland, Kylee Leland, Kent (Amanda) Petersen, Brice (Madison) Petersen, Devin (Sierra) Leland, Jenna (Jesse) Bonde, Jayden Leland and Tate Leland; seven great grandchildren, Amaya, Mira, Elena, Navy, Anne, Chance and Edie. Also surviving Arnold is his sister Dorothy Hynd. Arnold is preceded in death by his wife Thelma, son Kirby Leland and granddaughter Brooke Leland.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at Cambridge Community Center, (225 Water Street) in Cambridge, Iowa, with a memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held following the memorial service.
