Betty Jean Nagle, 85, died peacefully with her daughter at her bedside on Saturday, June 11, 2022.
Betty was born October 19, 1936, in Ames, IA to Harry Ramsey and Mabel (Johnson) Ramsey. She attended school in Ames and was the youngest of six children raised by their mother.
On February 16, 1956, Betty married the love of her life, Paul LaVerne Nagle in Leon, Iowa. Together they raised their four children, Larry Paul, Linda Sue, Paul LaVerne Jr., and Jerald Franklin in California and Iowa. They were lovingly married for 66 years at Paul's death in March 2022. Their caring relationship and playful demeanor long into life served as an example of a committed marriage that was able to withstand the test of time and the tribulations of life.
She worked at GFS in Nevada as a press operator until her retirement. Later, she worked part-time as a cashier at Target alongside her sister, Dorothy, and they had the most fun together.
Betty was loved by her family and will be remembered for many things such as her feisty attitude toward Paul and unabashed support of the Cyclones and the Chicago Bears. She enjoyed rooting against the Hawkeyes and would bet double against them. She loved playing cards including cribbage and later Old Maid, Trivial Pursuit, UNO, and Monopoly Jr. with the grandkids. Paul and Betty's home was the site of numerous summer lemonade stands thanks to Grandma's watchful eye and her expert lemonade making. Up until the day she passed, she completed dozens of crossword puzzle books each month. She knew more words than the dictionary it seemed! Grandkids requested her homemade chocolate wacky cake for birthdays and holidays for as long as she was willing to bake. For years, Betty was tasked with making her baked beans and homemade whipped cream during family gatherings and passed her homemade noodle recipe on to her granddaughters.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Linda Kamm (Dan); seven grandchildren, James Heintz (Heidi), Mike Heintz, Matt Heintz, Laure Beth Lyons (Matt), Paul LaVerne Nagle (Taylor Watson), Ashlee Nichols (Ty), and Jeri Garretson (Nick); eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; sons, Larry Paul, Paul LaVerne, and Jerry; her parents, two brothers, and four sisters.
Cremation will be followed by burial at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Ames, IA. A joint service for her and Paul will be held at a later date. The family thanks the VA Central Iowa and Sunset Hospice for their support and care.
