Obituary

Betty Garcia Schoondyke, 85 of Nevada, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at her home in Nevada.

Betty was born August 4, 1937, in Glendale, Arizona, the daughter of Daniel Q. and Maria (Fernandez) Garcia. She graduated from Glendale High School in 1955 and received her Associate's degree from Marshalltown Community College and did further study at Drake University. Betty worked as an administrative assistant for bankers, corporate executives, and non-profits. She was a translator and interpreter for Mercy hospitals and clinics, and was co-owner of The Latin Link translation service.

In 1964, after working in Arizona and California, Betty married Ken Schoondyke of Colfax, Iowa. In 1966 they moved to Newton, Iowa with their first child, Stacy. A son, Jeffrey, was born in Iowa, and the family lived in Eldora, LeClaire, and Johnston, Iowa.

Throughout her life Betty remained active with family, church, work, and community. She was a member of Tri-T, PEO, a founding member of Los Oradores Toastmasters, and worked in the auditor's office and at the polls. She read for the blind through IRIS, and taught ESL classes. Betty served as a volunteer interpreter at Mercy Hospital with the pediatric cardiac patients and families from Yucatan, Mexico. Just prior to her illness, Betty was a hospice volunteer.

In 2005, Betty moved to Nevada, Iowa, where she loved being grandmother to Christopher and Harold. Growing up with Betty provided fun, food, and crazy car rides. She went to every event she could, enjoying music concerts and sports events — in all sorts of weather! Betty was elegant, fun, smart, and enjoyed everything from art to opera to sports. She loved watching golf and football on TV while texting or phone chatting with her grandsons.

Betty is survived by her children, Stacy (Steve) Dobernecker of Nevada and Jeffrey Schoondyke of West Des Moines; her grandchildren, Christopher (Elise Burlage) Dobernecker of Atlanta, GA and Harold Dobernecker of Pella; and her sisters, Rachel (Patrick) Huveldt of Prescott, AZ and Virginia Macias of Phoenix, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dan Garcia.
