Obituary

Eugene Moody, 87, of Maxwell, passed away Friday, May 29, 2026, in Nevada, Iowa.

He was born May 16, 1939, in Nevada, Iowa, to Arthur (Mun) and Flossie (Vincent) Moody. He was united in marriage to Ruth Alma Eggers on April 23, 1960, in State Center. Eugene lived on the family farm near Maxwell his entire life and was deeply rooted in the community he loved.

Eugene was very active in the Maxwell community and in school events. He served on the chain gang for football games, kept the books for basketball games, was president of the Maxwell Boosters, and drove a school bus to many games. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell, where he served on the session, helped lead the youth group, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Rarely did he miss a ball game, music program or 4-H activity for his kids, grandkids and even his great-grandkids.

Eugene was also very active with the Maxwell Lions Club and served as District Governor for Iowa. He loved music and singing and was a member of the Ametones Barbershop Group. He helped lead the Indian Creek Circle 4-H Club and served for many years as a Story County Swine Superintendent. Through his involvement with the Story County Pork Producers, he especially enjoyed cooking and grilling and spent many hours in the Pork Tent at the Iowa State Fair. His love of grilling led to the family’s Country Cookin’ Catering business. Eugene raised and showed purebred Chester White pigs, raised Simmental cattle, and was a member of the Iowa Simmental Association.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Ruth Moody of Maxwell; his son, David (Alice) Moody of Collins; his daughters, Diana (Doug) Sampson of Nevada and Darcy (Sean) Travis of Altoona; and his son, Dan (Wendi) Moody of Maxwell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Crystal (Jesse) Walker, Cara (Josh) Schable, Celsey (Tyler) Orman, Todd (Laura) Sampson, Amy (Nate) Studer, Cory Sampson, Jordan (Kyle) Lafrenz, Dylan Travis, Chasity Moody, Shasta Moody, and Trystan Pitsenbarger; and by his great-grandchildren, Owen and Aiden Walker; Wayne and Elijah Schable; Ava, Kacey, and Skyler Orman; Kody, Tyler, Beau, Kade, and Brooklyn Sampson; and Brock Studer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Flossie Moody; his sister, Jeanette Beard; and his brother, Beryl Halterman.
