Collins native Charles Lester Fish died of complications from memory loss on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at Story County Senior Care in Nevada. He was 87.
Mr. Fish, who went by Charley, was born May 8, 1932, in Ames, Iowa, to Charles E. and Ruth Macintosh Fish. After his mother died, he was adopted by Marjorie Hughes Fish, his father's second wife.
He grew up on the family farm in Collins, and graduated from Collins High School. He received a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University, where he was a member of Adelante fraternity and ROTC.
Mr. Fish served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot, stationed in Florida, Tennessee and Japan. While stationed in Nashville, he met Edwina "Betty" Barrett at a YWCA dance. The two married March 16, 1957, in Nashville. They moved to the Fish family farm in Collins in 1958.
Mr. Fish worked as a farmer and as a technician at the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames. He belonged to the Collins United Methodist Church, and was active in the American Legion and the Collins Public Library. He enjoyed sports, especially baseball, and reading. He moved from Collins to Windsor Manor in Nevada in 2017 and later to Story County Senior Care.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997, his two sisters, Margaret Jane Squires and Ruth Anne Fish, and his parents.
Surviving are three children, Sandra Charlier Fish and her husband Jim Charlier of Denver; Charles E. "Chuck" Fish and his wife, Wendy Fish, of Denver; and John Fish of Chandler, Ariz.; two grandsons, Charles L. "Charlie" Fish and Andrew Fish, both of Denver; and his companion, Phyllis Terry, of Nevada.
A private family service will be held at a later date. The Fish family appreciates the care provided by the staffs of Story County Senior Care and St. Croix Hospice.
