Obituary

Colleen Miriam (Patterson) Swalwell was born on November 9, 1922, to parents Charlie Amos Patterson and Anna Leona (Ferguson) Patterson near Collins, Iowa. Colleen graduated with honors and as Salutatorian from Maxwell High School in 1940 and was united in marriage to William Thomas "Dudley" Swalwell on September 20, 1942, in Nevada, Iowa. To this union were born two daughters, Cheryl Ann and Georgia Lea. They made their home on a farm near Maxwell, and Colleen was proud of her Irish, Scottish and Cherokee Indian descent. Colleen was a member of the Peoria and Maxwell United Methodist Churches where she taught Sunday school for more than 20 years. She was a pillar of the Maxwell community, supporting the MACC and the Maxwell Museum. Colleen worked for the USDA in Nevada for 25 years as their office loan manager, where she helped farmers apply for loans. Farmers would line up just to see her. Colleen was famous in her family for her whipped mashed potatoes and gravy, and they always looked forward to her deviled eggs. She was selfless and was very giving to her family and friends. Colleen kept weekly hair appointments and always had her nails and toes polished. Colleen's life spanned almost a century and was fortunate to be able to drive until she was 95 years old. She lived through 18 presidents, 17 wars, two worldwide pandemics: Polio and COVID, a farming crisis in the 80's and saw the Harlem Globetrotters play in the Maxwell gym. She will be remembered as a highly intelligent, classy lady who always dressed to perfection. Colleen passed away peacefully on June 15, 2021, at Northridge Village in Ames. Colleen is survived by her daughter, Georgia (Ben) Carver of Ames; her grandchildren: David (Ronda) Page of Maxwell, Iowa, Marcy (Doug) Cheville of Maxwell, Iowa, Doug (Lornah) Page of Las Vegas, Nevada, Brian (Beth) Carver of Denver, Colorado, Mark, Angel Andrian and Arlene; and her great-grandchildren: Austin Page, Lucas Page, Lindsey (Ryan) Page, Jack Cheville, and Gracie Cheville. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dudley Swalwell; her brother, DeLane "Pete" Patterson, her daughter, Cheryl Page; and son-in-law, Jack Page.
