Craig Robert Hand age 66 of Maxwell, Iowa died on September 8, 2021, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Craig, son of Howard and Louise Hand was born on December 18, 1954, in Des Moines, Iowa. Craig grew up on the family farm near Maxwell, Iowa, the youngest of three sons. Craig attended school in Maxwell and graduated from Maxwell High School in 1973. Craig earned his Nursing Diploma from the Methodist School of Nursing in 1976 in Des Moines, Iowa. Craig's 38-year nursing career was spent primarily working as a nurse in endoscopy at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center and The Iowa Clinic. Craig met Pat, the love of his life, while working at Methodist and they married on February 28, 1976, at St. Michael's Church in Whittemore, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Jonathan, Kristine, and Laura and were blessed to be married for 45 years. Craig loved life and had a tremendous heart for family, the farm and helping others as a nurse. Craig dearly loved his wife and children, enjoying every moment he could to build memories through sharing the beauty in nature found on the farm and experiencing trips outside of Iowa especially to Canada. Craig found God's beauty on the farm and thoroughly enjoyed God's promise through the birth of calves each year, farming the land and enjoying the peace and quiet found in the country and nature. Craig was a gifted nurse who found the right balance of humor and compassion to support his patients. Craig was a firm believer in taking the time to hold a patient's hand to show compassion and alleviate patient anxiety. Craig was surrounded by his wife and children in his final hours of his life who held his hands as he took his final breath. Craig is survived by his spouse, Pat, three children: Jon (Michele) Hand, Kristy (Matt) Volesky, Laura (Jonathan) Ohrt. Grandchildren: Claire and Oliver Hand; Brooklyn, Katelyn and Joslyn Volesky; and Isaac Ohrt. Brothers Tom (Ruby) Hand and Chris (Connie) Hand, several nieces and nephews including Matt Hand, who spent a lot of time on the farm with Craig. Craig was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Louise Hand. A visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (422 First Street) in Maxwell A vigil will be at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 13, 2021, at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church (1102 NW Weigel Drive) in Ankeny. Burial will follow at the Maxwell Cemetery in Maxwell. The family requests that face coverings be worn at the visitation and the funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Catholic Church or the Maxwell Museum in memory of Craig. Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Maxwell is handling arrangements.
