Obituary

Darrell “Dinko” Dee Hunter, 74, of Cambridge, died on August 25, 2026, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. He was born on August 14, 1952, in Ames, Iowa, to Peter “Frank” Hunter and Elizabeth Bosworth.

Darrell graduated from Gilbert High School in 1970 and went on to build a long and steady career with the City of Ames. He worked there for 45 years and retired in 2017 as the Assistant Superintendent of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. His years of service reflected the reliability and dedication that marked so much of his life.

On June 9, 1984, Darrell married Kelley Rae Haberkorn at Cambridge United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Their marriage was a lasting and meaningful part of his life.

Darrell was a man who enjoyed working with his hands and spending time in his shop tinkering. He loved NASCAR, especially following Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt. His lifelong love of racing began with local dirt tracks and later took him to NASCAR venues, including Kansas Speedway, where he had proudly attended every year since its inaugural season in 2001. He also enjoyed classic cars and attended the Good Guys Car Show each year and was looking forward to restoring his many Dodge Polaras. The outdoors brought him great happiness, especially time spent in Colorado. He enjoyed camping, trains, going for drives, and watching birds, with orioles and hummingbirds being among his favorites.

He is survived by his wife, Kelley Hunter of Cambridge; his children, Angela (Chris) Rardin of Nevada, Jesse (Jacob) Golly of Pioneer, Tennessee, Mindi Hunter of Boone, and Christopher Hunter (Kristen Elfritz) of Cedar Falls; and his grandchildren, Makayla Rardin, Bailey Barber, Rylee Steffes, Brayton Rardin, Laine, Cadence, Hannah, Brandon Golly, Lillian Janssen, and Hudson Hunter. He is also survived by his brothers, Renal “Ronald” Hunter of Boone, Darwin “Dar” Hunter and his wife Denise of Story City, and Gale Hunter and his wife Anita of Jewell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter “Frank” and Elizabeth Hunter; and his brother, Francis “George” Hunter.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home, 1418 Fawcett Parkway, Nevada, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, also at the funeral home. Cremation rites will follow the service.

Darrell will be remembered for his steady work, his love of family, and the simple pleasures that meant so much to him—time outdoors, a drive on the open road, the excitement of a race, and the satisfaction of tinkering in the shop. His memory will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
