David Helstedt, age 67, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away in his home in Nevada, Iowa, on Monday, July 11, 2022.
He was born on August 4, 1954, in Veblen, SD, son of Reverend Lowell and Gladys Helstedt. He graduated from Radcliffe Community High School in 1973. He began work at Sunstrand Hydraulics in Ames, Iowa, where he was quickly promoted to supervisor. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1977 earning the rank of Sergeant and serving as Military Police until his honorable discharge in 1982. Following his military service, he enrolled in computer technology courses at Western Technical College in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Des Moines Area Community College, and used this education to mentor veterans in a regional Veterans Coalition.
He grew up spending much of his time outdoors with family and friends. He enjoyed lake activities including boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, and ice skating. He had an affection for animals, cars, music, and painting. As a teenager, he had several pets which included a Golden Retriever puppy he rescued who became a favorite family pet named "Red", helped care for a pony named "Blackie" and raised a calf for a 4-H project. He will be remembered for his quiet personality and sense of humor.
Dave is survived by his two children Jamie (Angie) Helstedt, and Angie Tscherter and her three boys Caelin, George, and Brady; his longtime friend Janet Michelsen; his sisters Mardell (Scott) Kiner, Marilee (Roger) Avery, and Marcia Scott; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private military service for family and close friends will be held for Dave at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Adel, Iowa on August 3, 2022.
