Donald Rex Beavers, 94, passed away Wednesday, March 2 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Graveside services and burial will be scheduled at a later time in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.
Rex was born November 1, 1927, to Rolla and Bertha (Hutchins) Beavers in Humeston, Iowa. The family moved to Collins when Rex was in the 5th grade and he graduated from Collins High School in 1945. After graduation, Rex enlisted in the Air Force in January, 1946. After serving at several bases in Texas, Massachusetts, Kansas, and Alaska, he was honorably discharged December 14, 1948. And the following day, he married Phyllis Airhart and they drove back to Iowa to make their home in Collins.
Rex pursued many careers in his lifetime. He was a farmer, the Collins town constable, and owned and operated (with Phyllis) Varsity Bowling Lanes in Collins. He then ended his working days at the Story County Sheriff's Department as head jailer from December, 1971 and retired in February, 1989 as a lieutenant. This was a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
Rex and Phyllis raised two children, Dawn Shaeffer of Collins, and Ron (Gloria) Beavers of Dayton, Ohio. He had four grandchildren: Shannon (Steve) Zelik, Shane (Stephanie) Venard, Ashley Kail (partner Lonnie Wright), and Ronald (fiancé Kelli Sanders) and seven great grandchildren: Aidan, Caleb, Grayson, Olivia, Holden, Loudon, and Emma.
Rex was an avid gardener and liked canning and freezing the produce.
He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, completing crossword puzzles and watching sports and game shows on T.V. But his favorite passion was making candy, especially at Christmas. He loved to eat it, sell it, and give it away. Many friends and relatives enjoyed his peanut brittle, fudge (many flavors), Buckeyes, caramels, divinity, pecan logs, nougat, bonbons, peanut clusters, turtles, date roll, and English toffee. That will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother, Reid, and his sister, Ramona Mahoney. Left to cherish is memory are his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Lorraine Beavers, and many nieces and nephews.
Cards may be sent to: Dawn Shaeffer, 306 2nd Avenue, Collins, IA 50055.
