Obituary

Donald V. Hackbarth (Don) 80, of Nevada passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at the Israel Family Hospice in Ames, Iowa. Don was born on September 13,1940, in Watertown, Wis. to Victor and Ruth (Von Bargen) Hackbarth. He graduated from high school in Belmont Wis. with the class of 1959, and played on the high school basketball and baseball teams. He continued to play in summer baseball leagues and liked playing golf. He had an interest in all sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. Don was an avid outdoorsman; enjoying fishing, ice fishing and hunting. He assisted with Boy Scouts as one of the leaders. Don devoted 16 years with the Iowa Fish and Game Conservation Commission (now DNR), including over-sight of the wild life exhibit at Ledges State Park, in Madrid, Iowa. Don had 40 years of distinguished service for the U. S. Government for the Department of Agriculture in the National Disease center, Ames, Iowa, as a research animal caretaker until his retirement in 2016. Don was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa. Don is survived by two sisters, Judy (David) Holmes, Jane (Erv) Moses and one brother David (Nancy) Hackbarth and also by Don's and the family's dearest friend, Johann Thiel; also survived by nephews and nieces; Julie (Kenn) Jones, Stephanie (Barry) Ko, Matthew (Julie) Moses, Aaron Hackbarth and Brent Holmes. Three great-nieces; Madeline Ko, Ava and Emily Hackbarth. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Lebanon, Wisconsin.
