Douglas Charles Starbuck, 69 of Nevada, passed away Monday, October 23, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Doug was born April 24, 1954, in Nevada, Iowa the son of Darrell Dayton and Charlotte Jean (McAtee) Starbuck. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1972 and was united in marriage to Helen Marie White on September 23, 1978, in Grinnell, Iowa. Doug and Helen owned the Hitchin' Post in Nevada in the early 1980's. Doug was a lifelong press operator and retired from Print Graphics in 2016. Following retirement, he provided lawn care and snow removal for residents of Nevada.
Doug loved everything about Nevada. He served on the Nevada Fire Department from 1987-1995. In his younger years, he was active with the Nevada Jaycees and the Lincoln Highway Days Committee.
Doug was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones, Green Bay Packers and the 49ers. He enjoyed racing, camping, and taking his dog Sugar for daily walks. Doug was known for his quick wit and sense of humor along with his garage parties; he would always be at the grill cooking or smoking meat. He knew how to have a good time and lived life to the fullest. Doug's family always came first, he loved to spend time with them.
Doug is survived by his wife, Helen of Nevada; his children, Tony Starbuck (Janese) of Des Moines, Megan Starbuck of Nevada, and Charlie Starbuck (Melissa) of Nevada; his granddaughter, Sierrah Starbuck of Corona, CA; his brother, Brad (Rhonda) Starbuck of Ames; his sisters, Kathie (Phil) Kuhns of Nevada and Linda (Frank) Jennings of Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Dayton Starbuck.
A celebration of Doug's life will be 2-5 p.m. at the Story County Fairgrounds Community Building in Nevada (lower level) on Sunday, October 29, 2023. Please dress casually or wear your favorite ISU apparel in memory of Doug.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nevada Fire Department.
