Drew James Holthaus, 22 of Ames, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020. Drew was born October 28, 1997, in Kansas City, the son of Brian Holthaus and Anne Feltman. He graduated from Rock Canyon High School in Littleton, CO in 2015 where he ran cross country and was involved with the schools' Biotech Club and Science Olympiad teams. Drew was in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and participated in Philmont and Sea Base High Adventure Camps. For four years in high school, Drew was part of the Colorado contingent for the American Regions Mathematics League (ARML) a national math competition. Drew excelled in math and science which led him to major in Biochemistry at Iowa State University, graduating in 2018. He had been working at Aptalogic in Ames where he enjoyed being a research scientist and working as part of the team to solve problems and advance scientific knowledge. At Iowa State, Drew was active with the conservation and climbing clubs. Drew enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, hiking and backpacking, and just became a certified scuba diver. He hiked from the north rim of the Grand Canyon down to the bottom and back to the rim on a 5-day backpacking trip. He liked to travel and explore and loved visiting with his many cousins and family in central Florida, northern Colorado, Indiana, and Oregon. He spent one summer working in Europe in the French Alps as camp crew and then teaching English at a small Belgian high school. Drew's favorite activities with family on breaks were to cook meals together, get the last rides of the day at the Disney Parks, play escape room games, and share reviews of the latest movies and comedy series. He had a quick wit and was quick with a laugh and smile. Many of his recent interests began at ISU through liberal arts education classes such as landscape architecture, drawing and watercolor, learning to play the ukulele and saxophone, and reading both science fiction and classic literature. Drew is survived by his father, Brian Holthaus of Portland, OR; his mother, Anne Holthaus of Pueblo, CO; his sister, Natalie Holthaus of Fort Collins, CO; his grandparents: Marie Giera of Leesburg, FL, and Jim and Marcia Holthaus of Bloomington, IN. He is also survived by an aunt, Susan Feltman and her children John and Katie Gottlieb, Lindsey Robinson and Chris Brittain as well as many beloved cousins of central Florida Jade and Jace Gottlieb, Savannah Strurtz, Conrad Brittain, and Aislynn Rouch; an aunt Jill and uncle Rob Rutherford and cousin Kathleen of Longmont, CO; and an uncle Eric and aunt Lisa and youngest cousin Mia Evans of Henderson, NV. Drew was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Conis Feltman, and an uncle, Barry Holthaus. We miss him greatly and his intense curiosity, love of learning, and his loving care for all of us; his family and friends.
