Obituary

Duane Ralph Brodie, 87, formerly of rural Nevada, passed away peacefully at 2pm April 22, 2026. Duane was born on May 21, 1938, to Ralph and Doris (Frey) Brodie. He was raised on the family farm west of Nevada and graduated from Milford Township Consolidated School in 1956. After high school, he attended Iowa State University and worked for the highway commission before farming with his dad in 1960.

On September 19, 1958, Duane married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Sorem, at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. Together they raised their four children, Garnet, Brent, Chris and Boyd instilling the values of love, laughter, responsibility, respect, integrity and faith.

Duane, lovingly referred to as "Grandad", was a devoted husband, a fun and loving dad, grandad, great grandad, brother, uncle, cousin, a cherished friend and neighbor to all of us. Duane and Barb retired from farming in 2002 moving to Ames and became active volunteers in many activities and pursuits, teaching, mentoring and serving in many capacities at the Nevada Methodist Church, on the Nevada Community School District Board of Education, in the Stephen Ministry, Story County YSS, Iowa State University Extension, Story County Heartland Senior Services, and the Ames Golden Kiwanis.

Duane was an avid fisherman. He started going on fishing trips to Ontario with his family when he was 5 and later shared and continued the legacy started by his parents Ralph and Doris, hosting and guiding family and friends at his favorite place, a family cabin in Wabigoon.

He enjoyed experiences with loved ones whether around a table playing games or traveling. His favorite trip was going to Norway and Scotland in 1977 to see family. His favorite game was cribbage. He loved to fly, owned a plane and was a licensed pilot.

He was such a vibrant man, full of life. He was loud and boisterous. He was transparently caring, honest and authentic. People were immediately drawn to him. He loved to laugh. He loved to tease in a thoughtful and caring way. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved God and his Savior, Jesus Christ.

We will all miss him tremendously.

Blessed be the memory of Duane Ralph Brodie.
