Obituary

Elaine Rowe Brown, 89, of Ames, died Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Northridge Village in Ames. A time of gathering and celebration will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Gilbert Community Center (new fire station – 105 SE 2nd Street, Gilbert IA 50105). Face coverings are recommended. Elaine was born in Saskatchewan, Canada on April 16, 1932 to George and Anna Rowe. She moved to Iowa with her family in October 1937 and resided in the Arnolds Park/Lake Park area. She graduated from Lake Park High School in 1950 and pursued her teaching certification at Iowa Normal School (UNI). Elaine married Earl Brown, of Gilbert, Iowa on February 21, 1953, and began her teaching career in Jordan, Iowa. After taking a leave of absence to raise their children, Elaine returned to UNI to renew her teaching license and worked as a teachers' assistant in the Gilbert School District. Upon recertification, she became a full-time, beloved 2nd grade teacher in Gilbert and retired in 1996 with 29 years of service to the Gilbert School District. After retirement, Elaine and Earl enjoyed visiting family, fishing, and traveling to Alaska and Canada. She was an advocate for conservation, and she and Earl volunteered countless hours to the Story County Conservation Board. Elaine was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators. She was also a founding member of Northridge Village and resided there for 6 ½ years. Her family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Northridge Village for their wonderful care and commitment to their mother. She is survived by her four children: Karol Brown, of Bixby, OK; Michael (Theresa) Brown, of rural Nevada; Joanne (Tom) Isenhart, of rural Ames; and Barbara (Tom) Goldsby, of Littleton, CO; eight grandchildren: Jessica (Dekenon) Page, of Plant City, FL; Stephanie West (and friend Eddie Fuentes), of Owasso, OK; Chelsea Clifton, of Broken Arrow, OK; Chris (Annie) Brown, of Flagstaff, AZ; Nikki (Adam) Weinkauf, of Iowa City; Beau Goldsby, of Lakewood, CO; and Clare and Serine Isenhart, of Des Moines; six great-grandchildren: Isaiah Page, of Oklahoma City, OK; Chanelle Page, of Plant City, FL; Emery Lingafelter, of Broken Arrow, OK; and Elizabeth, Elijah and Naomi Weinkauf, of Iowa City; one sister, Shirley Frederickson (and friend Terry Anderson), of Lake Park; and one brother, Robert (Denise) Rowe, of Afton; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Brown; parents, George and Anna Rowe; one sister, Joyce Mader; one brother, Charles Rowe; and one granddaughter, Nici Goldsby. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Gilbert Education Foundation, 3 Sisters Non-Profit, or Story County Conservation Center in memory of Elaine Brown.
