MAXWELL - Evelyn May Lane, 86, of Maxwell died Saturday, February 7, 2004 at her home. Evelyn was born May 2, 1917 at the family farm west of Slater, the eldest daughter of Carl and Alice (Weeks) Torgerson. She attended school in Slater, Huxley, Ames and graduated at Kelly High School in May 1936. Evelyn was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. She had attended church at the Maxwell Church of the Brethren the last seventeen years. On November 23, 1936 she was united in marriage to Lloyd Joseph Lane. To this union on daughter, Karen Kay was born. Lloyd passed away October 29, 1986, a month before their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived in Maxwell all their married life and were in the painting business for a number of years. Evelyn had worked at the Ordinance Plant during wartime. Since 1987, Evelyn had been the Maxwell News Correspondent for the Tri-County Times and enjoyed talking to many people throughout those years getting their news. Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Karen and Lyle Wheeler of Cambridge; her granddaughter, SueAnn Kay Wheeler of Westerville, Ohio; two sisters: Helen Denten of Slater, Mildred Green of Indianola; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, her husband, and a brother, Alvy "Stub" Torgerson, preceded her in death. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the Bacon Funeral in Maxwell with Rev. Harold Smith officiating. Interment will be in the Peoria Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation with the family will be at the funeral home Monday, 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell in charge of arrangements.
