Gene
Newsome
July 29, 1959 – April 2, 2025
Eugene LaMar Newsome went home to Jesus on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, after a journey with cancer.
Gene was born on July 29, 1959, in Stuart, FL to LaMar and Catherine (McLain) Newsome. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1977 before moving to Florida, where he fished commercially before starting a landscaping business. In the late eighties, Gene returned to Iowa to be closer to family. He then obtained his plumbing license, and went on to own and operate Newsome Plumbing in Nevada for many years. He was a true master plumber and a meticulous craftsman.
Gene deeply enjoyed the outdoors, spending his time golfing, doing yardwork, and gardening. He especially loved grilling and anything to do with food. He loved to laugh and make others laugh.
Gene had a strong faith and lived it out loud, attending Cornerstone Church in Ames. He was a caring, compassionate, and generous man and never knew a stranger, making friends everywhere he went, spreading kindness. Gene embraced the challenge of cancer with humility, humor, and determination, inspiring many along the way.
Gene is survived by his wife, Sherry; his daughters Ashley (James) Fitzgerald and their children, Clarence, Lyndley, and Nial, and Cassie (Nick) Steenhagen and their children, Jentry and Jory; and his sister, Mari. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Cody Newsome.
Gene has been cremated, and an event to honor Gene's life will be planned in the coming months. Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is caring for Gene and his family.
