Harlan Slippy, 76 of Ankeny, died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines. Harlan had a large benign pituitary gland tumor removed at Mayo Clinic five weeks ago, and died suddenly of unexpected complications.
Harlan was born December 2, 1944, in Ames, Iowa the son of William and Lillian (Huisman) Slippy. On May 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to his soulmate Pamela Aldrich at the Presbyterian Church in Cambridge. Harlan worked in the trucking industry his whole life, 26 years were at Metro Waste Authority, and he spent the last 9 years hauling mail part-time across Iowa.
Since Harlan and Pam lost their baby Kristi Sue so young to cancer and were never able to have more children, they spent a lot of their time and resources helping family members and friends. He was a generous, hilarious soul who liked to play jokes on everyone. His generosity knew no boundaries, sometimes not even the bank balance. He never wanted his loved ones to go without.
Harlan's hobbies were vacuuming, dusting, mowing, cleaning his pickup, making people laugh and since the pandemic, keeping delivery drivers busy by ordering on line.
Harlan is survived by his wife, Pam of Ankeny; his siblings: Donna Rothman of Weslaco, TX, Ron (Judy) Slippy of Krakow, Wisconsin, and Diane (Dave Ott) Ellis of Nevada; his brother-in-law, Kelly Aldrich of Cambridge; his nieces: Pammie (John) Aldrich, Kari Langer, Maria Andrade, LeAnne Diab, Lori (Rick) Daniel, Trista Fraser, Tracy Ellis, Kari Pearce and Kim (Terry) Payton; his nephews: Todd (Vicki) Stowe, Billy (Darlene) Ellis, Matt (Mindy) Slippy, Mark (Beth) Slippy, John (Pam) Slippy and Glen Terrell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Kristi Sue Slippy (in infancy) and sisters-in-law, Kay Terrell and Glenda Aldrich.
A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2021, at the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge. Following the service, everyone is invited to join the family at the Cambridge Community Center for lunch.
