Harold Dean "Brink"
Brinkman
August 23, 1932 – May 7, 2023
Harold Dean Brinkman (Brink), 90, of Nevada, IA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2023 with his wife and daughters at his side.
Harold was born on August 23, 1932 to Dr. Norman and Mildred Kimberley Brinkman of Colo, IA. He graduated from Colo High School in 1950 and graduated with a Business degree from the University of Iowa, after serving two years in the U.S. Army.
He was united in marriage to Janet Sue Newton on February 8, 1958. To this union, three children were born; John Newton, (deceased, 1964), Kimberley Sue and Susan Kay. His girls were his pride and joy.
He worked for Sinclair Oil in Harlan, IA before moving to Nevada in 1962. He worked at State Bank and Trust for eighteen years, during which time he attended the School of Banking at The University of Wisconsin for three years. He also worked for Union Story Bank in Ames, then he was president of the Collins Exchange State Bank, which was started in 1910 by his grandfather John B. Kimberley and his Uncle Frank.
Harold was a member of the following organizations: Sigma Nu Fraternity, over 50 years in Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Scottish Rite Consistory and Shrine, William F. Ball American Legion Post #48, VFW, 60 years in Nevada Rotary, as well as being a life-long member of the Nevada First United Methodist Church.
Harold cared deeply for Story County and for the Nevada community. He served in many capacities, including Nevada City Council, Story County Conservation Board, Story County Soil Conservation District, Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Board of Trustees and he was on the building committee overseeing construction of the new United Methodist Conference Center in Des Moines. He served on the Nevada Cemetery Board for 19 years, and joined a small group who started the Community Bank (Availa Bank) where he served as a board member for twenty years. In the late 1980's he ran for the State Legislature but his family was grateful that he was defeated.
In 1988, Harold was a visionary for the Nevada walking trail system. He was committed to seeing people enjoy the great outdoors. Harold thought the Chicago Northwestern Bridge at the very back of the Knoll Ridge Community would make a beautiful trailhead, which started the conversation with the city that led to Nevada's current walking trail system, which began in 1995. He said, "This walking trail will be my legacy."
Throughout his life, he was a mentor, friend and confidante to many in the Nevada community and beyond. Harold and Jan's friendship with their Bridge Club has spanned over 60 years and have continued to expand their circle with their friends in Naples, Florida.
Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Janet; daughters Kimberley from Bethesda, MD and Susan (Barry) Chapla from Arvada, CO; grandchildren Maya Sue Caceres, Braeden John and Justin (Alex) Chapla; and great granddaughter, Charlie Jo; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
