Obituary

Harold "Shorty" Jackson, 84 of Ankeny, formerly of Nevada, died Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Shorty was born March 15, 1938, in Tama, Iowa the son of Ward Allen and Ruby Alvina (Flint) Jackson. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1957, where he was very active in sports. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps serving from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1961. He spent time in Japan and played football while in the Marines. Once discharged, Shorty attended Ellsworth Community College and played football. After graduation, he went to work for John Deere in Ankeny, where he was employed for 30 years. In retirement, Shorty enjoyed working for Nevada and Ames Parks & Rec. On September 25, 1965, Shorty married Marsha Van Steenis and to this union three sons were born, Eric, Todd and Bret. Shorty coached little league in Nevada. He was also very active with the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames where he served as Deacon. He also was a member of the Nevada Golden K Kiwanis Club. Shorty is survived by his wife, Marsha; his sons, Eric Jackson of Phoenix, AZ, Todd Jackson of Ankeny and Bret (Teri) Jackson of Ankeny; five grandchildren: Whitney, Alyssa, Kaylee, Nicole and Jack Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Jade Matthews and Ezra Jackson; his brother, Lloyd (Lori) Jackson of Ankeny and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Howard (Pat) Jackson and sister-in-law, Judy DeVries. A visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 24, 2022, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church (159 Sheldon Avenue) in Ames with Dr. Brett Becker officiating. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to College Presbyterian Church or MICA in memory of Shorty.
