Obituary

Irene Doris Howard, age 87 of Nevada, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. Irene was born in Newton, Iowa, on June 22, 1938, the beloved daughter of George and Geraldine (Harrison) Hodgson. She graduated from Milford High School and was united in marriage to Bill Howard on June 2, 1979, in Fernald, Iowa.

Irene dedicated much of her professional life to serving others through her work with Social Services in Story County. She was known for her compassion and commitment, making a positive impact on the community she called home.

Outside of work, Irene found joy in sewing, camping, traveling, riding snowmobiles, fishing, and shopping. Her adventurous spirit and creative talents were evident to all who knew her, and she cherished every moment spent with her family and friends.

Irene is survived by her son, Scott (Kelly) Pierce; her daughter, Shelly (Dennis) Black; her grandchildren, Jamie Black, Jessy Black, Jennifer Hudson, Nicole Black, Kristi Hodges, Jordan Glen, Josh (Sarah) Pierce, and Cheyne Robinson; her great-grandchildren, Raylyn Glen, Finley Glen, Tadum Glen, Addie Pierce, Jameson Pierce, Shiloh Hodges, Emberly Hodges and Shelby Hodges; and her sister, Kathy (John) Sternevant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Howard; her son, Rod Pierce; and her parents, George and Geraldine Hodgson and her brothers, Bill Hodgson, and Rick Hodgeson.

A memorial service honoring Irene's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada. Irene's kindness, resilience, and love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
