Dan Huhn passed away December 7, 2020 of complications from heart conditions. He was born July 17, 1931 in the Nevada Sanitorium. Named James Daniel Huhn, he was the first born child of Loren and Ina Huhn. Dan spent his whole life in Story County, living on farms within an eight mile radius of his childhood home. That home was a quarter mile away from the home of the woman he eventually married, Arlene Marie Tudor. He and his brother and sister, the twins, Gay and Kay Huhn, played with Arlene and her twin sister, Darlene, as they grew up just down the road from each other. There are stories of the plays put on by the youngsters for their parents in the Tudor home and, as they got older, detasseling crews piling onto a bag-swing that hung from a tall tree on the Huhn farm.
After graduating from Fernald High School in 1950, Dan attended Iowa State College for a year while working at Slemmons Implement in Nevada. He and Arlene married in 1953 and set up their first home on the Malmanger farm south of McCallsburg. Their daughter, Holly, was born in 1954 and their son, Keith, in 1955. Dan farmed at that location for seven years and then moved his family to the Bricker farm north of Nevada. After farming there for three years the Huhn family had the opportunity to move in 1963 to the Tudor farmstead where Arlene grew up and where Dan lived until entering Rolling Green Care Facility for the last four years of his life.
Dan loved farming and the freedom that being self-employed gave him. He initially raised hogs, cattle, sheep and chickens, eventually letting the chickens go, then the sheep. He had a cow/calf Angus herd for a time, as well as a Hampshire hog farrowing operation, which he ran with his son when Keith graduated from Iowa State University. They won first place at the State Fair with one of their barrows. The father-son team farmed 1100 acres and operated a large feeder pig operation, finishing out 5,000 hogs annually on four different sites.
Dan was active in Farm Bureau and served on the State Board from 1980-1991. This gave Arlene and Dan the opportunity to attend the annual conventions in major cities in the US, travelling twice to New Orleans and Honolulu. They made many good friends during those years. He received an award from Farm Bureau for distinguished service from 1957-1992. Dan served on the Iowa Corn Growers board from 1983-1991. He was president of the Story County Pork Producers for three years and served on their board nine years. He also served several years as a trustee for Richland Township.
Dan was an elder in the First Christian Church of Nevada and later served as an elder at Central Presbyterian Church of Nevada. Most recently he attended the Family of Faith Church in Nevada.
Dan will be remembered first as a man totally devoted to his family. He was an example for them of loving sacrifice all of their lives. His devotion to Arlene as her primary caregiver during the last thirteen years of her life while they dealt with her Parkinson's disease was admired by all. He is greatly missed by his family: daughter, Holly Page (Dan), son, Keith Huhn (Marce), grandchildren Ashley Houck (Ryan), Carly Schieffer (Michael), Haley Huhn, Riley Huhn, Kyle Beneventi (Hilliary), Kirby Hamilton (Justin), Brian Beneventi, and great-grandchildren, Tucker Houck, Cy Houck, Bryce Houck, Silas Schieffer, Mary Grace Schieffer, Phoebe Schieffer and Thea Hamilton.
A memorial service celebrating Dan's life will be held in the spring. Contributions to a memorial fund may be sent to Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa or Heartland Senior Services in Ames, Iowa.
