James "Gus" Charles Gustafson, 78 of Nevada, died Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada.

Gus was born June 12, 1944, in Wahoo, NE, the son of Charles and Bernice (Peterson) Gustafson. He graduated from Waverly High School in Nebraska. Gus enlisted in the United States Navy serving during Vietnam. He was incredibly proud of his service on the USS Chickasaw during his time in the Navy. He worked as an electrician for his entire life and could answer pretty much any question regarding electricity. He loved to watch gameshows, Walker Texas Ranger, NCIS and Law & Order. Gus enjoyed football and was a John Wayne enthusiast. If you asked him, he was the most proud of his children.

Gus is survived by his sons, James (Chris) Gustafson Jr. of Tama and Scott Gustafson of Union; his daughters, Nichole (Chris) Lutjemeyer of Syracuse, NE and Heather (Kenny) Thompson of Nevada; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Lee Gustafson of Lincoln, NE and Gene Gustafson of Stanton, NE; and his sister, Sandy Miller of Austin, TX. and his beloved Shih Tzu, Skipper. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Zina, and his brother, Roger Gustafson.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2023, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. Family will greet friends beginning at 1 p.m. until the service time. A private family burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Immediately following the service, please join the family for fellowship and refreshments at the American Legion, 1331 6th Street, Nevada, IA.
