Jewell Nels Richardson was born on Wednesday, August 23, 1939 at home to Nels and Hilda (Wee) Richardson outside of Huxley, IA. He was the 4th of 5 children with 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
Jewell grew up loving his family, farming and- always – his friends. He went to high school in Shipley, IA and played basketball there. After high school, he farmed in the Story County area with his father. For a time, he farmed by himself after Nels & Hilda moved into Huxley.
Jewell enjoyed bowling & tractor pulls. You could always find him with a Farmall tractor, and he was one of the strongest people there. When many of the people there would be carrying only one weight with two hands, Jewell would be carrying a weight in each hand.
Jewell met the love of his life – Donna Ann Runge Peters – in 1968. They went on their first date on December 31 @ Chet's Tavern in Cambridge, IA. It stuck pretty well, because they were married on Friday, April 25, 1969 in Mason City, IA, and celebrated 48 years of marriage in 2017.
Donna came with 2 boys, Russ and Jeff, that Jewell loved like his own. So, he adopted them. In 1971 Jewell and Donna adopted a third child Sara that they brought home on New Year's Eve in a snowstorm from Sioux City, IA. Apparently it was the first time that the boys had ever eaten pizza.
Jewell worked at the Joy and Johnson Auction Co. in Ames, IA, for about 40 years. He loved all of the people that he saw every Tuesday night! He also worked at the Colo Auction after Joy & Johnson closed.
Donna and Jewell also did craft shows for years. She would paint the items, specializing in Santa Claus, and he would cut them out of wood in his garage shop and haul everything for her in and out of the shows. They even did the Iowa State Fair in the Cultural building for many years.
Family was everything to Jewell. He would arrive early to a family event and be the last to leave. It didn't matter what time it was, where it was, how far he had to go, or what the weather. He would be there!!
Jewell and Donna lived together on their acreage outside of Cambridge Iowa for over 40 years until Donna's death on May 23, 2017. Jewell was able to sell the acreage and move into The Meadows apartments in Nevada, IA, in April 2018. He was so happy living there!! He had many friends and family that visited him.
On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, Jewell passed away at Bethany Manor in Story City, IA, with him were his son Russ and daughter Sara.
