MAXWELL – Jimmy J. Smith, 78, of Maxwell, died Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Kavanagh Hospice House on 56th Street in Des Moines. Jimmy was born April 22, 1936 at Maxwell, Iowa, the son of Paul and Grace (Cowman) Smith. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1954 and attended DMAAC and several other Trade Schools. He was united in marriage to Connie Earles on April 20, 1963 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Jimmy served with the 101st Airborne Division of the Army. He was an electrician and had worked at Firestone and also for ORE-MET before retiring. He attended the Maxwell Presbyterian Church. Jimmy enjoyed the outdoors where he could deer and squirrel hunt. He also was an avid bowler and had bowled in several Senior Olympics. He loved his grandchildren, a good bowling score and working with wood. Jimmy is survived by his wife: Connie, of Maxwell, Iowa; one son: Jimmy Allen Smith of Maxwell, Iowa; two daughters: Debra Ann (Ronald) Hayes of Maxwell, Iowa, Tonya Sue Smith of West Des Moines, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Christopher Hayes, Michael Hayes, Aaron Hayes, Cody Smith, Colton Smith, Makenze Smith, Delaney Smith, Dillon Smith; four brothers: Robert Smith of Rhodes, Iowa, Eldon (Carol) Smith of Gesham, Oregon, Clyde (Carol) Smith of Independence, Iowa, Everett (Gail) Smith of Maxwell, Iowa; four sisters: Anna Tyler of Maxwell, Iowa, Mildred (Dale) McIntosh of Maxwell, Iowa, Pauline Perin of Rhodes, Iowa, and Lois (Kenneth) Westercamp of Bloomfield, Iowa. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Earl Smith; and three sisters: Rebecca Smith in infancy, Dorothy Smith, and Ethel Nady. Funeral services will be 1:30 PM Thursday at the Maxwell Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Maxwell Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kavanagh House on 56th.
