Obituary

Katie Lynn Cook, age 30, of State Center, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at home under the compassionate care of UnityPoint Hospice.

Katie was born on November 13, 1995, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Kelly Christopher Cook and Shannon Gilleland. She graduated from The Harbor in 2014 and went on to work in various retail positions, where she met many people along the way and brought joy to many people along the way.

Katie will be remembered for her bright spirit, her laughter, and the joy she brought to those around her. She loved motorcycles and going for rides in side-by-sides. She found happiness in the outdoors; especially while fishing or spending time at parks. Katie had a way of making moments fun, memorable and she was often the life of the party.

Above all, Katie’s daughters were her world. She treasured time spent laughing with them, playing cards, and enjoying Bluey Monopoly together. Her love for animals was also close to her heart, especially her dogs, Brie, Mellow, and Paisley, as well as her mother’s dog, Bella. Katie enjoyed collecting turtles, butterflies, and frogs, and she loved the color purple.

Katie is survived by her mother, Shannon (Curtis) McMullen of State Center; her father, Kelly Cook of Des Moines; her Step-Mom Janetta Anderson of Chariton; her former husband and the father of her daughters, Neikalo Holland of Granger; her daughters, Zaylee and Brynlee Holland; her brother, Kyle (Kayla) Cook of Altoona; her half-brothers, Waylon Anderson and Taven Cook; her stepbrothers, Adrian, Kody, and Kolby McMullen; and her stepsisters, Stefanie (Ashli) Smith, Lillie McMullen, and Mary McMullen. Grandparents Cliff and Linda Squires of Des Moines.

Katie is also survived by and loved by numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jean and Cecil Cook and Marvin Gilleland; her stepfather’s father, Sam McMullen; and her father’s stepfather, Thomas King.

Katie has been cremated, and a celebration of life honoring her will be held 12-5 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Hickory Grove Park at the Oriole Ridge Lodge, 67464 250th Street, Colo, IA 50056. Out of respect for Katie and her struggle with alcoholism, the family respectfully requests that this be a dry event. We appreciate your understanding and support in honoring Katie’s memory in this way.
