Obituary

Kelly Howard Haws of Nevada, Iowa, died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on February 10, 2023.

Visitation will be held from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Monday February 20, 2023, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada, Iowa with a funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. The internment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery near 677th Ave and 180th St. (north and east of Nevada and close to the farm). Lunch will be served at the American Legion in Nevada at 4:00 p.m. following the interment.

Kelly was born on a farm in Runnells, Iowa on June 3, 1936, to Lawrence and Enid Haws. The family later moved to a farm near Colo. Kelly graduated from Fernald High School in 1955 with his class of five, some of whom remained his closest friends. He joined the Army and served from 1958-1960 and in was in the Reserves from 1960 to 1964. He became an electrician and farmer. He worked and travelled for Rolfes Electric and GrainTech wiring temperature cables for grain bins for many years. Kelly's calling brought him back to farming and he moved to a farm near Camdenton, Missouri where he clear cut and bulldozed rough land to turn it into a crop and hay farm where he lived and raised crops and cattle in the Ozarks before moving back to the family farm near Colo where he continued farming until 1985. He started Kelly's Electric and seemingly never retired as a farmer or electrician, as he continued to help friends and neighbors on the farm, assist in the wiring of many farms and shops, or even change light bulbs for former clients in town who just needed help. He served as a volunteer for the Nevada Fire Department from 1990 to 2002.

Kelly picked up the hobby of rebuilding old tractors, bringing them to parades, and going on antique tractor rides with his boys and friends. He loved to tinker in his shop, working on tractors, and rebuilding engines, lawnmowers and other equipment, with the help of his friends, working in the yard, taking his dog Macy, for "walks" and generally visiting friends and family, both in Iowa and across the country.

Survivors include his wife, Deb (Sparks) Haws, sons Danny (Sharon) Haws of Stillwater, Minnesota and David (Lisa) Haws of Kingsville, Missouri; Dee Dee Greenwell, Brenda Pierce, and grandchildren, Claire, Jay; Shannon, and Cameron; Aslynne, Elissa, Tynan, Kelly, Kaleb, Keagan and Kruz and great grandchildren, Lucian , Calliope and Koda; and his brother Mike(Joyce) Haws of Ankeny. He is also survived by Deb's sons, Jerrad and Jason (Jennifer), and her grandchildren, Harley, Scot, Aydan, Amilya, and Bryleigh.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna (Crosby) Haws, and second wife, Joyce (Honkanen) Haws, his parents, Lawrence and Enid Haws, and brother Pat Haws.

Kelly was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and friend. His biggest pleasure in life was visits and time spent with his family. He was known for his impromptu road trips to visit his kids, see his grandkids play sports or to visit and old friends in different states. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for his good-natured ribbing, a trait he has passed on to his kids.

He would be pleased to have memorial contributions be made to the Story County Animal Shelter.
