Louis Richard "Rick" Walter, 70 of Nevada, died Thursday, December 29, 2022.

Rick was born April 9, 1952, in Mason City, IA to Harry A. Walter Jr. and Helen Louise (Dennis) Walter. He graduated from James B. Conant High School in Hoffman Estates, IL. After a couple of years at a junior college and then 2 years working at Mount Rushmore National Park, he came to Iowa and earned a bachelor's degree in Forestry from Iowa State University in 1979. On November 21, 1981, Rick was united in marriage to Vicki Blanchard at the Bangor Liberty Friends Church. Rick worked for the Story County Conservation Board as one of the first county foresters in the state. He later took on the role of Park Ranger for Hickory Grove Park (Indian Creek Unit) and lived on site from 1989-2002. Rick was just starting to enjoy retirement after 16 years of employment with Harold Pike Construction in Ames, retiring in May 2022. He enjoyed golf, a Cyclone or Bears win, trips to the Black Hills, SD area, and spending time with his family and spoiling the grandkids.

Rick is survived by his wife, Vicki of Nevada; his sons, Joel (Kelly) Walter of Powersville, MO and Matt (Brittany) Walter of Cedar Rapids; and his grandchildren, Rex, Mae and Hank. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Sally Walter Kelts of Rapid City, SD and Earleen Walter of West Des Moines; his mother-in-law Kay Blanchard of Indianola; his brother-in-law Wes (Lynn) Blanchard of Indianola; three nephews and three nieces, along with several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Jim, Don and Tom; father-in-law Rex Blanchard and his grandparents.

The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada, IA. A private family graveside service will be that afternoon at the Bangor Friends Cemetery in Bangor, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in memory of Rick.
