Obituary

Mary Jeanne Kirby was born October 2, 1923, to Graham and Hazel (Ernst-no relation to Joni), Kirby in Story City, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Story City and toured as a professional trombonist with the Kilty Trumpeters, a women's brass quartet. She completed nurses' training at Nebraska Methodist, graduating in 1945. Mary was in the US Army Cadet Corps and worked at the VA hospital in Bakersfield, California before transferring to the VA in Knoxville, Iowa in 1947 where she met William "Bill" Bagnall from Dallas, Iowa. She and Bill married in 1948 and lived in Rock Island, Illinois, moving back to Iowa in 1960. To this union were born Martha (Paul), Teresa (Curt), and William. Mary continued her nursing career until retirement from Mary Greeley Medical Center in 1987. Mary passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at the age of 98 at the Eastern Star Home in Boone. Mary was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, Iowa where she was a Deacon and an Elder. She was a member of United Presbyterian Women, active in the Sewing Ladies ministry, and other missions. She was a member of PEO and the Order of Eastern Star. Mary moved to Ames, where she was grandmother to the kids of her entire block. She welcomed any kid waiting for the bus to come into her home and be warm and dry. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and music. She was a witty and loving person who enjoyed life and gave much of herself to many. She is survived by her three children, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, four nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, grandson Peter, her parents, her siblings and her daughter-in-law, Sue. A visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 24, 2022, at Central Presbyterian Church (932 5th Street) in Nevada. Burial will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada. Masks are required at both the funeral service and visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church in memory of Mary.
