Paul LaVerne Nagle, 92, died peacefully Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at his home in Nevada.
Paul was born February 24, 1930, in Ames, the son of Farley Franklin and Cecil Ruth (Hurley) Nagle. He attended school in Ames and served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. Following his service in the Korean War he was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
On February 16, 1956, Paul married Betty Jean Ramsey in Leon, Iowa. Together they raised their four children, Larry Paul, Linda Sue, Paul LaVerne Jr., and Jerald Franklin in California and Iowa.
Paul and Betty enjoyed cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones, purchasing football season tickets for many seasons. They vacationed to Las Vegas several times. He was a member of the American Legion and proudly supported veteran initiatives. Paul was an entrepreneur, having owned several businesses such as P&L Western Decorators that painted multiple Air Force bases in California. Paul's career was highlighted by ownership of Cyclone Steeple Jacks that was operated with his son Jerry. Their reputation was known throughout Iowa for specialty work including asbestos abatement, steeple renovation, and high aerial work on government buildings and towers.
Paul will be remembered for many things but most of all is his loving heart. He cared about others and showed it in many ways such as his demanding work ethic that he required of "the crew," by wearing his poppy-covered hat in support of veterans, and by always reminding the grandkids to be careful when driving. He was proud of his 66-year marriage to Betty and gently teased her with their grandkids, all the way up until his very last days.
Paul is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Linda (Daniel) Kamm; grandchildren, James (Heidi) Heintz, Mike Heintz, Matt Heintz, Laure Beth (Matt) Lyons, Paul LaVerne (Taylor Watson) Nagle, Ashlee (Ty) Nichols, and Jeri (Nick) Garretson; his sister, Sandy Jensen of California; eleven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, Paul LaVerne, Larry Paul, and Jerry; three brothers and six sisters.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date and thanks the VA Central Iowa and Sunset Hospice for their support and care.
