Richard Dean
Coe
June 17, 1927 – October 22, 2023
Richard (Dick) Coe, 96, of Nevada, Iowa (formerly of Urbandale, Iowa), passed away at home on October 22, 2023.
Dick was born June 17, 1927, near Woodbine, IA, the son of Fred and Mary Coe. He happily lived on the farm until his family moved to Des Moines when he was 14; his rural spirit endured his entire life. He graduated from Roosevelt High School. He was briefly in the Army at Ft Knox, Kentucky, in the peace time immediately after WWII.
Upon military discharge, Dick returned to Des Moines except for 6 months of technical training in Wisconsin. Dick worked for Taylor Industries for over 30 years, installing commercial refrigeration in new grocery stores around Iowa. He was working at a filling station, however, when he met the love of his life, Joy Ross, who came in to get her car serviced. Dick and Joy were married in 1953.
In 1957, Dick and Joy built a house in Urbandale, Iowa, where they lived for the next 58 years and raised their daughter, Nancy. They spent countless weekends on a family farm adjacent to Joy's parents outside of Cincinnati, Iowa. There the threesome rode horses, had a large garden, played with the numerous pets Grandpa took care of for them, and generally enjoyed country living at its best.
Dick was a kind, gentle, generous man who loved and was devoted to his family. His sense of humor was evident in his twinkling, slightly mischievous smile. He loved to fish and made yearly trips to Canada with his fishing buddies. He was also a talented woodworker and thoroughly enjoyed creating furniture and unique items in his well-equipped workshop. A fan of "classic" country music, his favorite satellite radio station, Willie's Roadhouse, was almost always playing in later years.
Dick and Joy moved to Nevada, Iowa, in 2015 to be closer to family. Joy passed away in 2016. Dick remained amazingly independent until this past year. He was excited to move back to the country in May 2023, where he lived in an accessory dwelling unit (mobile home) on his daughter's and son-in-law's acreage. He and Nancy explored their prairie nearly every day in his beloved John Deere Gator, noting the seemingly daily changes in the flora and fauna.
Left to cherish Dick's memory are daughter Nancy (John) Clough of Nevada, Iowa; grandson Andrew Clough of Woodward, Iowa, and granddaughter Elyse Clough of Nevada, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
The family deeply thanks Home Instead and Dick's devoted team of 24/7 caregivers, who allowed him to live in his own home to the end, just the way he wanted it. Thanks also to St. Croix for excellent home hospice services.
Per Dick's wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date. Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.rasmussonfh.com. Memorial contributions may be made to One Heart Equestrian Therapy (Ames, IA), the Story County Animal Shelter, Children and Families of Iowa, Iowa PBS, or an organization of your choice.
