Richard D. Henry, 91, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 16th, 2023, at Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames surrounded by family.
Dick was born July 19, 1931, and grew up in Sloan, Iowa. He was one of four children of Fritz and Flossie Henry. Dick met Frances "Fran" Henry and their first date was roller skating with friends. They dated while they both attended college, Fran at Iowa State University and Dick at the University of Iowa. Dick graduated from the University of Iowa in 1953. He joined the Army after graduation and served for two years. Dick and Fran later married on June 19, 1955, in Nevada, Iowa. He began farming in 1955 with Fran's father, Kenneth Long. Dick farmed until 1993, building on a legacy that has spanned four generations.
Dick and Fran built a life together in Nevada, Iowa, where they raised their children and attended Central Presbyterian Church. Dick spent his life as a hard-working farmer, a father to his two sons and grandfather to his three grandsons. He enjoyed morning coffee with friends, golfing, spending winters in Florida with Fran, traveling the world, and cheering on the Hawkeyes. He was married to Fran for 66 years before her death in 2021.
Dick is survived by his children Michael (Velma) Henry of Sedona, Arizona, and Steve (Laurie) Henry of Nevada; his grandchildren Scott (Jessica) Henry, Kyle (Alyssa) Henry and Eric Henry; his great-grandsons Wyatt and Weston Henry; his twin sister Marilyn Alfredson, and his brother-in-law Charles Oehlerking. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Flossie Henry; his brother, Judson Henry, and his sister, Barbara Oehlerking.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, March 20th, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home, in Nevada. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 21st, at 10:30 a.m. at Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada, with burial following at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Central Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be sent to 20965 650th Ave., Nevada, IA 50201.
