Roger was born in Britt Iowa to Herbert (Ole) and Pearl (McCoy) Monson but moved to Alden at a young age. He attended Alden Public School and Ellsworth Community College where any sport was his “major”. While at Ellsworth he played both basketball and baseball. After marrying he and his family enjoyed the comradery of “fast pitch” softball until his early 40’s.

One Fall evening in 1959 Rog waited outside the Alden school for any new teachers and quickly met Deloris Pals, where she was a first-year teacher. Rog and Dee were married the following year and to this union two daughters were born, Tamra Kaye and Kelley Renae.

Rog first worked in the construction of Butler steel buildings and later for Rural Electric in Iowa Falls. After transferring to Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. He and Dee moved to Nevada where he lived for the remainder of his life. Rog loved his telephone work and was one of the fastest guys to clear trouble. His cable pulling skills came in handy during our church remodel in 2006 where he and grandson Brandon supervised pulling thousands of feet of wire for the new sound system.

In their retirement years Rog and Dee traveled the country in their Winnebago with the most memorable trip being the 2 month trip to Alaska in 2005 and to New York City in 2000, exactly one year before 9-11.

Rog was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers.

Roger’s survivors include his wife Deloris (Dee), children Tammy (Mark), Oxley of Nevada and Kelley (Bill), Kelley of Carlisle, 5 grandchildren, Brandon (Lisa) Oxley of Nevada, Jeremy (Courtney) Oxley of Nevada, Chantel (Kyle) Frerk of Nevada, Lauren (Kristen) Friedrichs of West Des Moines, Grant (Danielle) Kelley of Des Moines, 10 great grandchildren, his brother Keith (Judy) Monson of Indianola, his brother-in-law Gale Smith of Iowa Falls as well as many longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Margie.

In lieu of flowers memorial money will be donated to Women at the Well Prison Ministry at Mitchellville, Embrace Iowa, and the Nevada United Methodist church.

Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. with his celebration of life service to follow at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th Street in Nevada.
