Roger Wilson Thorson, 93 of Cambridge, passed away Friday, August 16, 2024, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
A visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Nazareth Lutheran Church (517 Vine Street) in Cambridge with Pastor Marcia Kisner officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge.
Roger was born December 31, 1930, in Nevada, Iowa, the son of John Emil and Trena (Wilson) Thorson. He graduated from Shipley High School in 1948 and served in the United States Army from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1953. Roger was united in marriage to Janet Mae Thompson on February 10, 1957, in McIntire, Iowa. He farmed outside Nevada, worked road construction for Sesford and retired from Martin-Marietta Materials.
Roger was a devoted member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cambridge. He enjoyed mowing, antique John Deere tractors and reading. He also enjoyed traveling to the Mississippi River at Guttenberg and watching the barges.
Roger is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janet of Cambridge; his children: Lorene (Mike) Geiger of New Hartford, John (Debbie) Thorson of St. Charles, Jeff (Linda) Thorson of Ames and Scott (Rita) Thorson of Kelley; his grandchildren: Curtis Mabbitt, Brad Mabbitt, Linda (Jeffrey) Schott, Paul (Victoria) Geiger, Wyatt Thorson, Kenny Thorson (Anna Keller), Melissa (Roger) Mann, Jamie Larson and Nick (Kara) Larson; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Alexis, Jordy, Rueben, Brison, Hunter, Garrett, Eleanor and Genevieve. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters Phyllis Madison and Marilyn Bader.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Israel Family Hospice House or the Iowa Heart Association.
