Rose Mary Krieg, 89, died of complications from pneumonia, on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 22, at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada, IA from 2-4 PM with a scripture service at 4 PM. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Monday, Sept. 26, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada, IA with the Rev. Rick Dagit officiating. Elisabeth Montegna will serve as lector, Jeff Krieg will serve as Eucharistic Minister. Casket bearers will be Jeff Krieg, Jason Christenson, Roger Bannister, Jason Montegna, Eric Montegna, and Gabe Christenson. Honorary casket bearers will be Meghan Montegna, Lizzie Bannister, and Gretchen Bannister. Graveside services will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Independence, Iowa at 3:00 PM Monday, Sept. 26. Rose Mary was born Rose Mary Catherine Ocken on December 11, 1926 in Carroll, Iowa. She was the youngest child of John Ocken and Theresia Dentlinger Ocken. She grew up on the family farm near Maple River, Iowa, with her nine siblings before moving to Carroll, Iowa. There, she met Russell Krieg and they married on December 27, 1955. The couple lived in Ames, IA, Nevada, IA, and Mount Ayr, IA before settling in Independence, IA where they lived until Russell's death in 1997. Rose Mary continued to live in Independence until 2013 when she moved to Windsor Manor in Nevada, IA. In 2016, Rose Mary moved to Valley View Village in Des Moines, IA where she lived until her death. Rose Mary was a well-known member of the communities in which she lived. She worked in retail (Spurgeon's in Carroll, Johnson's True Value, in Nevada, and Pamida in Independence) until her retirement. After retiring from work, she spent much of her time volunteering at her church and for Meals on Wheels. After Russell's death, she increased her volunteer activities in Independence, working in the gift shop at People's Memorial Hospital, singing in the funeral choir at St. John's Catholic Church, participating in her parish prayer line, and mentoring children at the middle school. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters at St. John's and the Slick Chicks birthday lunch club. Rose Mary was devoted to her family and is survived by her four children: Jan Krieg, Jeff Krieg, Jeannie (Jason) Christenson, and Jackie (Roger) Bannister. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Beth, Jason, Eric, and Meghan Montegna; Gabe Christenson; and Lizzie and Gretchen Bannister; as well as 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her nine siblings and their spouses, and her husband Russell Krieg. The family requests that memorial donations in Rose Mary's name be directed to two of the charities that Rose Mary supported, The National Breast Cancer Foundation and Catholic Charities of Dubuque.
