Russell Lloyd
Sult
June 9, 1934 – February 8, 2023
Russell Lloyd Sult, 88 of Maxwell, died Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada.
Russell was born June 9, 1934, in Gilman, Iowa, the son of Uri and Velma (Hanen) Sult. Russell was baptized in the Gilman Christian Church, and he graduated from Gilman High School. He joined the Navy in 1952, serving on three ships: USS Amphion (a tender), USS Valley Forge (aircraft carrier) and the Norfolk Portsmouth Mothball Fleet. On July 12, 1954, Russell was united in marriage to Bonnie Roop. They had three sons, Russell "Rusty", David, and Wayne. After leaving the Navy he worked for his father as a carpenter and painter. He stayed in carpentry for over fifty years. He loved to work and once said, "he never drove a nail he did not love." Another interest of his was being a member of the American Legion for over sixty years. He said" he had a good life and a lovely wife for over sixty-eight years." His favorite poem and one that described his faith was, "Footprints in the Sand", believing that it was the story of his life. He and Bonnie loved to travel and lived in several states. During their travels, they touched the border of every state from Canada to Florida and New York to California. Iowa was home and they always returned.
Russell is survived by his wife, Bonnie of 68 years, his sons: Russell "Rusty" Sult of Mesa, AZ, David (Anette) Sult of Maxwell, and Wayne (Michelle) of Cleveland, New Jersey, his sister: Kolleen Shollen-Barger of Marshalltown; his brother, Dennis (Paula) Sult of Ankeny; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Phyllis Eilders.
