Obituary

Stephan Paul Soesbe, of Nevada, Iowa, passed away from heart failure on July 2, 2021, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Steve was born September 2, 1945, in Ames, Iowa, to Paul and Lucille (Segar). He graduated from Ames High School in 1963. He was a gifted athlete and four-sport letter winner: baseball, football, basketball, and track. He still holds the State record for the football throw. Steve attended Webster City Junior College where he played basketball. Following two years of study, he joined the Army; he was medically discharged for cardiac issues. He returned to WCJC and received a two-year degree. He held various positions with the railroad, post office, and other entities. While living in Georgia, he became a regional manager with Pizza Hut, a position he enjoyed very much. Upon returning to Ames, he sold insurance until he opened Tradewinds Lounge. He made many long-time friends who themselves created great memories there, until he was forced to close in 2009 due to health issues. Steve married Gail Leo and had two children, Shannon (Soufane Bahichaoui) and Stephan, Jr. On August 8, 1984, he married Connie Fry and was a stepfather to her two boys, Nathan and Jay Williams. Steve was a driver in the success of the Ames Slowpitch Softball Association and actively played the game he loved for four decades. He enjoyed hosting tournaments in Ames and traveling many weekends to play out-of-town. He enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates and opponents alike. He also enjoyed golf, racquetball, volleyball, bowling, darts, and board games, especially trivia. His trivia team played in the inaugural Cy's House of Trivia, taking home the first-place trophy. He was an avid Cyclone sports fan, especially Women's Basketball and held season tickets for many years. He was also a diehard L.A. Dodgers fan and loved talking or texting with friends about the games. He turned his love of music into Tradewinds Music, a DJ service for weddings and other gatherings. He loved to sing and host karaoke and loved to dance. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Keith Soesbe, and niece Logan Ewald. Survivors include his wife of nearly 37 years, his children and step-children, his brother Jerry (Deb) Soesbe, sister Kay (Charles) Ewald, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Per Steve's wishes, no funeral service or visitation will be held. A celebration of life gathering will take place at River Valley Softball Complex in the near future. Condolences and memorials may be sent to Con Soesbe; 134 K Avenue, Nevada, Iowa 50201. Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
