Obituary

THELMA MAY ROADENIZER HUBBARD BORN AUGUST 28, 1929-PASSED JUNE 3, 2021, surrounded by family. Thelma Hubbard (aka Grandma and Old Mother Hubbard) was born on a farm that was located five miles south of Maxwell, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles and Aramilda (Grimm) Roadenizer. She graduated from Maxwell High School in 1947 and Des Moines Community College with Associate Arts Degrees in Industrial Marketing and Graphic Arts graduating in 1973. On October 9, 1948 she married Harlan Leroy Hubbard who passed away in 1982. Thelma had many jobs throughout her life. To name a few: Thelma and Hub owned and operated Hubbard Hardware in Maxwell, was Food Service Manager at Maxwell Community Schools, Receptionist for Hach Chemical Company of Ames, the Administrator for the Keystone Apartments for the elderly in Ames, Sorority House Mom at ISU in Ames, and worked at the Public Library in Ames until she was 80 years old. From 1946 to 1949 Thelma was top Saxophonist for Morrow Entertainment for Women's Orchestra. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Association of HUD Management Agents, VFW Auxiliary in Maxwell, and the Story County Genealogy Association. Some of the offices that she held were: President and Secretary of the VFW, Secretary of Housing Committee of the American Association of Housing for the Aging, Sunday School Superintendent and President of the Christian Women's Fellowship and other offices for the Maxwell Christian Church, President for Story County Food Service Association, President for Veterans Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Sponsor for Teen-Age Square Dance Club, a 4-H leader and Chairman of Program Committee Professional Secretaries International. From 1971-1972 Thelma and Hub welcomed a foreign exchange student from Africa, Anna AkuShika Richter Addo, who quickly became part of the family. Grandma loved being with the family and her wish was to see them one last time before she passed. The family was by her side singing hymns (she was singing also), telling stories, laughing so hard she was in tears sometimes, holding hands, praying, and telling her this was not a good-bye but a see you later. She was able to make the decision as to when she wanted to transition and her family was by her side. As she went to sleep she had a smile on her face and the nurses commented that she looked at peace. She was a Donor Network donor and her skin will be used for Breast Cancer Survivor reconstruction and skin grafts for burn victims. Another one of her wishes. The family would like to thank her niece Deb Carpenter for the wonderful care she gave her for the last several months and to the Unity Point Hospital in Marshalltown, IA for the wonderful care they gave her and the family during her last few days. Those left to remember her with love are: Children: Tom Hubbard, Bonnie (Larry) Mitchell, Anna AkuShika (Bennie) RichterAddo-Jones, Patsy (John) Griffith; Grandchildren: Rachel Jensen, Michelle (Chris) Stimson, Kristina (Jason) Reece, Matt (Kristy Evans) Mitchell, Kevin (Shawna) Mitchell, Mike (Lindsey) Mitchell, Dustin Polage, Irvin (Renee) Casely-Hayford, Natasha (Chris) Cole, Bennie L (Tre) Jones III, Amy (Rod) Murphy, Ben Griffith, Charles (Tracy) Griffith; Great Grandchildren: Dylan Jensen, Maggie Birkestrand, Zach Birkestrand, Kadyn (JD) Anderson, Kyle Tickle, Michael Kirk, Justin Kirk, Devin Mitchell, Makayla Mitchell, Taylor Mitchell, Maelyn Mitchell, Keaton Mitchell, Tyler, Jaidan, Tanner, Tehani, Avianna, Kynston, Harley Renner, Kirsten Renner, Landon Renner, Caelen Renner, Hunter Hykes, Ian Griffith, Lylah Griffith; Great Great Grandchildren: Jaxdyn Birkestrand, Dakota Will, Ava Will, Carter Will.
