Obituary

Timothy Steven Smith was born on December 29, 1962, to Donna Marie Canney and Gary Robert Smith in Fort Knox, Kentucky. The family later moved to Maxwell, IA, Minden, NE and finally Janesville, IA, where he graduated from high school in 1981. When aspirations of sports fame and college went out the window, Tim worked in the oil fields in Oklahoma for 2 years. After suffering a severely broken ankle there, he moved back home and began working in the security business for entertainers and bouncing at local bars. Tim also worked as a delivery driver and later a salesman for Carfrae Meat Company in Cedar Rapids for 15 years and then for Linn Star Transfer delivering beds and appliances for 7 years. When a back injury forced Tim to quit working as a delivery man in 2002, he answered an ad looking for help at Center Grove Orchard just outside of Cambridge. Tim was hired as a tour leader for groups of small children initially and increased his involvement to groundskeeper, decorator and head of parking. He was missing his time working security, so he applied in 2004 at Wells Fargo Arena where he was placed in charge of the main floor for concerts for over 20 years.

Tim met the love of his life, Lisa De Haai, in 1986 while working in the grandstand at the Iowa State Fair. Three years later they were married on the Bill Riley Stage during the state fair and spent 35 years together. They have enjoyed celebrating their anniversary while camping at the fair every year since. Tim loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, practical jokes (the bigger the better--as long as they weren't on him), live music, a good party, spending time outdoors and in his garage, having the best tan, making wood art, and celebrating Halloween. He also loved making others happy whether it be through his extravagant holiday decorations, cooking & baking or upgrading someone's seat at a concert.

Tim had been battling stage 4 cancer for the last 16 months. He was hospitalized after a fall and before he was released, he suffered a pulmonary embolism which he never recovered from. He passed away on September 16, 2024, at the age of 61 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines surrounded by his family. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Lisa, daughter Katie (Steven) Proctor of Waukee, son Ken Smith of Cambridge, brothers Matt Smith (Heather Edwards) of Osage & Shawn (Suzanne) Smith of Waterloo, grandchildren Geneva and Bruennen Proctor, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
