Vincent LeRoy Olson, 71 of Nevada, died Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames from heath complications of exposure to Agent Orange and contracting COVID-19.
Vince was born March 14, 1949, in Eldora, Iowa the son of Maynard Julian and Vivian Lucille (Johnson) Olson. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1967 and was united in marriage to Sheryl Diane Sills on March 7, 1968 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Vince was drafted into the Army during Vietnam at age 18 and served until his honorable discharge in 1969. He worked many years as a long-haul truck driver and 31 years for Story County Secondary Roads. Vince was a member of the William F. Ball Legion Post #48 and had served as Assistant Fire Chief on the Nevada Fire Department.
Vince coached youth soccer in Nevada and enjoyed taking Sunday drives and traveling. He could often be found at Prairie Meadows playing the slots with Sheryl. He also enjoyed watching eagles and had an appreciation for their beauty. More than anything, Vince loved to be with his family.
Vince is survived by his wife, Sheryl of Nevada; his children: Shawna (Todd) Smith of Kent, WA, Mason Olson of Nevada, and Britt Olson of Nevada; his grandchildren: Anthony, Anson, Paris, Avery, Atticus and Porter Smith, Jackson, and Jonah Olson and Bodie Roney; his sister, Marcia (Mich) Tendall of Nevada; and his brother, Mondell Olson of Ames. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Vail, and Marly Olson; and his sister, Valerie Klein.
A celebration of his life will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Rasmusson-Ryan Funeral Home (1418 Fawcett Pkwy) in Nevada. Face coverings and social distancing will be required.
