DES MOINES - William "Bill" L. Woodard, 79, of Des Moines, died Friday, February 1, 2008 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. Bill was born December 14, 1928 in Maxwell, Iowa, the son of Walter and Vera (Troup) Woodard. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1947. Bill served in the Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Bill worked as an underwriter for Preferred Risk Insurance Company in Des Moines until his retirement in 1991. Bill was a member of the Maxwell United Methodist Church, the Maxwell VFW, and had served as President and National Board member of the Cactus Club. He had served as a volunteer with the Special Olympics and had taught several ceramics classes. Bill was an avid bowler and loved classical music and traveling. Bill is survived by his mother, Vera, of Nevada, Iowa; his long-time friend: Raymond Curtiss of Des Moines; 3 sisters: Ellen Kueker of Norwalk, Betty (Wilbur) Gamble of West Des Moines, Pearle Elder of Maxwell; 7 nephews; 4 nieces; 25 great nieces and nephews; and 5 great-great nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his father, and an infant brother, Howard. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Maxwell Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM Monday at the Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
